"The significance of the intimate personal relationship between physician and patient cannot be too strongly emphasized, for in the diagnosis and treatment are directly dependent on it. One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest for humanity, for the secret of caring for the patient is caring for the patient."

the story of the bowl of light ritual

bowloflight-text-only.png

The Hawaiian culture believes that we are born with a full bowl of light and as we journey through life, various things dampen our bowl of light. These may be things like illnesses, relationship difficulties, or world events. The 1st of each month, I participate in a sunrise ceremony with my hula hālau (hula group) Ka Waikahe Lani Mālie. Together we hike up to Makawehi Cliffs on the southside of Kaua’i and we choose a stone. As we walk out to our sunrise viewing site, we are quiet as we reflect on events which have dampened our bowl of light over the last month.  Prior to the sunrise, we cast our stone into the ocean in a symbolic gesture of releasing those burdens, thus restoring us closer to our full bowl of light.

I have seen my work with patients over the years as an exploration of what dampens their bowl of light. I am helping patients prevent disease, reverse illness or just achieve more optimal health and living.
